KIMI IZAKAYA / BOGOTA / 2016 - 2017

KIMI is an "izakaya" (Japanese bar) located in a trendy area of Bogotá, blending the traditional residential character of the neighborhood with the vibrancy of nearby restaurants, bars, hotels, and nightlife. This project stands out for its integration of various elements, creating an authentic Japanese bar and restaurant experience. We embraced the challenge of designing a space that reflects the traditions of Japanese cuisine and sake, while also capturing the true atmosphere of an izakaya.

The concept was developed in collaboration with Mrs. Nakamura, an exceptional Japanese chef, which added depth and authenticity to the project. The interior design focused heavily on the quality of light, striving to recreate the characteristic "dim light" setting typical of izakayas. To achieve this ambiance, we integrated several elements, including wooden shutters, bamboo blinds and wooden louvers.

Amidst this subdued lighting, select details were highlighted to create contrast. One of the main dining areas features 14 large paper lamps that evoke the grandeur of Japan, softly illuminating the space. For added privacy and warmth, we recreated the traditional izakaya booth, where customers can dine in intimate, separate spaces defined by bamboo ceilings and wooden vertical louvers. The tables in these booths are equipped with kotatsu heaters, enhancing the cozy atmosphere.

The primary aesthetic concept of this project was based on both the quality of light and the minimal use of decorative elements. Striving to recreate the characteristic "dim light" typical of izakayas, the design focuses on simplicity, allowing the beauty of the space to emerge through its architectural materials, details, and carefully controlled lighting.
