MICHII HOTEL COMPETITION / SIERRA NEVADA SANTA MARTA / 2017
Two distinct proposals—one for the Sierra and one for the Seaside—were developed for a high-end tourism company in Colombia. This company’s strategy focuses on offering genuine experiences in authentic, untouched locations, primarily through adventure lodges and expeditions. Their goal is to create a positive impact on the indigenous natural and cultural environments.
We embraced the concept of UNITY in our designs, aiming to emphasize simplicity, empathy, and the connection between mind and universe. This approach fosters a horizontal, intimate, and calm communication among people, allowing them to live fully in the present moment, free from distractions.
UNITY is expressed through modest details, natural and neutral raw materials, and simple volumes. The design embodies the absence of color and the timeless quality of the spaces.
The Sierra proposal centers on the calm interaction of travelers with the dramatic topography, deep scenic views, and ever-changing weather. We created a network of small plazas connected by paths and stairs, reminiscent of Japanese mountain temples, where each space becomes a unique universe where time stands still, and one connects with the place. The village-like compound encourages gatherings around fire pits, while the villas, organized around small plazas, offer privacy and comfort, integrating seamlessly with the natural landscape.
The Seaside proposal is rooted in the concepts of contemplation and re-connection with the present moment. The main pavilion, housing all public functions, is unified under a single roof, while the villas are arranged in a geometric array that ensures privacy and creates spaces for meditation and contemplation of the ocean’s power.
